The evolution of items such as plastic films, medical membranes, glass tubing, and ophthalmic products has driven the development of more precise manufacturing processes. For example, the desire for less invasive medical procedures has resulted in smaller medical and ophthalmic devices. Such miniaturization requires that manufacturers maintain very tight tolerances of critical dimensions such as material thickness. Therefore, it is increasingly important to have a reliable method of measuring absolute thickness in real time.

Proven optical interferometer technology is used to provide the most accurate and reliable thickness measurement available. In addition, this non-contact technique results in the ability to make measurements in situ. This is important for ophthalmic applications because center thickness and sagittal height of a contact lens can be measured in either a dry or wet environment. This optical technique also has the advantage of being able to measure the thickness of a single layer or multiple layers. This benefits the production of medical products such as balloon catheters and tubing because the thickness of their ultra-thin walls and their inner and outer diameters can be measured simultaneously.
